The Executive Director of the Institute of Economic Research and Public Policy, (IERPP), Dr. George Domfe, has refuted claims made by Mussa Dankwah of Global InfoAnalytics on his Facebook timeline to the effect that President Mahama’s regimes have had much significant contributions to the country’s GDP growth than President Akufo-Addo.
Reacting to the data shared on Mussa Dankwah’s wall on Facebook, Dr. George Domfe, in an interview with some media outlets, described the data supplied by Mussa Dankwah as quite foreign and misleading since they do not have any relationship with official data by the Finance Ministry and the Bank of Ghana.
“This data is a pure invention of his own mind. The facts as the data shows, do not support his manufactured figures. If he was minded to finding out the accurate data to use in his analysis, he would have done that” Dr. Domfe said.
“Mussa Dankwah is misinforming the public. It is never true that Akufo-Addo recorded the least economic growth. Go to the Bank of Ghana to learn about the growth” Dr. Domfe advised.
“Under President Mahama, growth rate for 2013 was 7.3%. In the year 2014, it was 2.9%. In the 2015 fiscal year, Ghana recorded a growth rate of 2.1%, and in 2016, Ghana recorded a growth rate of 3.4%, and this was under President Mahama”he indicated.
The IERPP’s Executive Director emphasized that despite the challenges faced by President Akufo-Addo, factors which were more extraneous than local, the administration performed far better than the trouble-free Mahama administration.
“Under Akufo-Addo, GDP in 2017 grew at 8.1%, and that of2018 was 6.2%. In 2019, the economy grew at 6.5%, and in the year 2020, when COVID-19 struck, growth rate was 0.51%. In the year 2021, the economy grew at 5.4% whilst the2022 fiscal year recorded a growth rate of 3%. In 2023, Ghana’s economy grew at 2.9% and in the year 2024, the economy recorded 5.7% growth rate”
The Development Economist who teaches Economics for Public Policy at the University of Ghana said that these figures are verifiable and are very accurate, unlike the ones employed by Mussa Dankwah for his analysis.
Dr. Domfe assured the public that Institute of Economic Research and Public Policy, IERPP, will, from time to time educate Ghanaians on topics related to the economy, research, security and policy to help shape public policy as the country navigates the current economic situation.
