GHANAIANS MUST KISS THE FIGHT AGAINST GALAMSEY GOODBYE

Many a Ghanaian had hoped that the coming into office of the Mahama administration would mark cusp for illegal mining activities to be brought considerably down if not halted across the country.

What is happening now is a far cry from the savoury promises President Mahama made during the 2024 electioneering campaign. Ghanaians were promised an end to galamsey by John Mahama and his party leadership in the run-up to the 2024 elections.

While we can all attest to the fact that galamsey activities have intensified since the NDC won power, the government is also doing a lot more to enhance illegal mining in the country.

Over the course of the week, the Ghana-China Mining was inaugurated. It has been described as a historic moment by functionaries of the Mahama administration, a watershed that will upscale the production of gold as government sets up GoldBod.

The Minister of Lands and Water Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, Ibrahim Mahama, the President’s brother and the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, graced the event with their ‘huge’ presence.

This new bond between Ghana and China will further enhance illegal mining activities in Ghana. It is common knowledge that galamsey is largely done by these Chinese hired by Ghanaian financiers. They have the expertise in this mining area, and have, therefore, been significant contributers to the galamsey menace.

How anybody saw it ideal to form an official alliance with the Chinese in mining is a question the gods can probably answer. Instead of running away from these Chinese, we are rather embracing and forming formidable alliances with them.

In the coming months, our lands are going to undergo intense depletion, our water bodies would be insanely polluted, our forested areas will be degraded simply because John Mahama has asked the Chinese to go in there to mine gold from our soils.

Mahama is not the Messiah they sold to us. He came to plunder our resources using his brother, Ibrahim Mahama, as a conduit. May we never have a leader couched in the shape of John Dramani Mahama in future.
