How can you claim to lead a lean government but with a huge budget for the Presidency? ~ Afenyo-Markin Asks Mahama

The Minority Leader, Osahen Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has raised eyebrows about the huge budgetary allocation to the Presidency when the Mahama government has been praising itself for running the leanest government in recent years.

Reacting to the 2025 budgetary statement read by the Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Effutu Legislator expressed shock at the budgetary allocation for the Office of Government’s Machinery as against the previous government.

“Lean Government yet fatty fat political expenditure at Jubilee House” Hon. Afenyo-Markin wrote on his Facebook page.

During the delivery of the 2025 budgetary statement, the finance minister, Ato Forson stated that an allocation of GH¢2.711 billion to the Office of the President as compensation to the staff.

Meanwhile, under the Presidency of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, in the 2024 budgetary statement, an amount of GH¢326.9 million was allocated for staff compensation.

It is instructive to note that under Akufo-Addo, there were 8 agencies under the Presidency with the GH¢326.9 million allocation. John Mahama’s GH¢2.711 billion being allocated to the Presidency will take care of 4 agencies.

These raise questions about President Mahama’s claim of running a lean government as against that of the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration. Indeed, the lean government rather has a fatty fat political expenditure at the Jubilee House.
